AVIRT (Active Violence Immediate Response Training) is a comprehensive program that combines active shooter response skills with immediate trauma care, including life‑saving bleeding control techniques.

What AVIRT Is

AVIRT is designed to prepare individuals and organizations to recognize warning signs of potential violence, respond quickly in an active shooter situation, and provide immediate medical aid when EMS is not yet available. It is offered by the Homeland Security Institute (HSI) and is recognized nationally.

Key Training Components

During AVIRT training, participants learn to:

  • Recognize warning signs of potential violence using situational awareness

  • Decide on the appropriate response: escape, evade, or attack, depending on the situation

  • Apply critical bleeding control techniques such as direct pressure, tourniquets, and wound packing to stop life‑threatening bleeding
